Relation between Splendore-Hoeppli Material and the Inflammatory Cells in Certain Bacterial Infections

Abstract

Two cases of eosinophilic granuloma with rhinitis were described, involving a 13-month-old Japanese heifer (case 1) and a two-year-old Japanese heifer (case 2). These animals had bilateral nasal congestion and the nasal cavity was occupied by large tumor-like masses. In the first case, the nasal mucosa was greatly thickened due to severe eosinophil infiltration. In Case 2, there are many plasma cells and eosinophils. Epithelial cells with bacterial organisms were observed in both animals. The extracellular eosinophilic deposits of the Splendore-Hoeppli material are formed between intact filamentous bacteria and living epithelial-like cells and look like elongated needle-like cells, similar to actinomycosis. In contrast, in the case of another purulent Trueperella infection, neutrophils containing intact coryneform bacteria showed coagulation necrosis and fusion, and finally turned into sulfur particles with no protrusions on the surface. These differences indicate that at least two types of Splendore-Hoeppli occur in bacterial infections.
