Bio-Fungicide in the Control of Post-Harvest Fungal Rot of Cucumber Fruit

Authors:Johnston Charles, Burgess Shaun

Fungi are a major limiting factor in cucumber production in Nigeria. The loss caused by fungal attack is 20–30%. The purpose of this study was to provide useful information on controlling inexpensive, affordable, natural and environmentally friendly biocides for fungal rot of cucumber fruits after harvest. The results showed that the plant extracts tested were Moringa oleifera and Chromolaena odorata. Causes a marked reduction in the radial growth of the pathogen. This indicates that they have potential for fungal toxicity. Phytochemical analysis on test plants showed that alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, phenols, saponins and terpenoids were present in C. odorata, and M. oleifera contained all of the above phytochemicals described above in addition to the alkaloids.
